Hearing Aids Questions & Answers

Won't hearing aids make me look old?

If you're imagining that hearing aids are big, bulky, and beige like they used to be, think again! Modern hearing aids are very discreet, so most people won't even notice you're wearing anything. Even if they do notice, the truth is that hearing loss can happen to anyone of all ages, so it doesn't mean you're old. If anything, hearing aids help keep you young by letting you stay connected and involved.

Will hearing aids make me hear like I used to?

Unfortunately, hearing aids can't cure hearing loss. They're very powerful, and today's hearing aids do a great job giving you natural sound. But nothing will be quite the same as your own ears. It's important to go into this with realistic expectations. We think you'll love what hearing aids can do for you, as long as you know that there are limits.

Why are hearing aids so expensive?

Hearing aids are a lot more complex than just speakers and microphones, and they do much more than just turn the volume up. They're like miniature computers that translate sound into something easier for your brain to understand. For your money, you're getting a whole lot of power. And because hearing aids usually last 5-7 years, it's an investment that will do you good for a long time.

How do I take care of my hearing aids?

It's important to clean them every day, change the wax filters regularly, and store them in a dry place (i.e. not your bathroom) overnight. We'll go over all of this and more when you get hearing aids from us. This regular maintenance can keep your hearing aids working well for years to come. Also, bring them to us for regular check-ups so we can give them a deep cleaning and make sure everything's working right.

What if I'm not comfortable with small buttons or changing batteries?

Hearing aids come in lots of different shapes and sizes, so if dexterity is an issue, let us know and we'll simply find a hearing aid model that is comfortable and convenient for you. There are even some rechargeable models available so you can skip out on changing batteries altogether.

Do I have to buy two hearing aids? Why can't I just get by with one?

With two hearing aids, your brain is able to understand things like where sound is coming from around you. Also, you can hear more clearly at a lower volume with two hearing aids in, which is more comfortable and will lead to a better experience for you. And there's a risk that if you can only hear well out of one ear, your brain will stop focusing on the other ear and you may lose even more of your hearing in that ear.

Can I wait on getting hearing aids if my hearing loss isn't that bad?

If you or the people around you have noticed something's not right, chances are it's actually affecting your quality of life more than you think. Give hearing aids a try and you might be surprised by what a difference they make. If you wait too long to get hearing aids, you may lose your ability to understand certain sounds. That's because the brain only maintains what it needs, so if it goes a long time without needing to understand certain sounds, it may lose some of that ability.

What if I'm having trouble adjusting to my new hearing aids?

The most important thing is to remember to be patient. You didn't lose your hearing overnight, and it'll take a little time before you adapt to having it back. Try to wear your hearing aids as often as you can, for as long as you can, to give yourself a chance to get used to them. If they're really uncomfortable and you feel like something might be wrong, don't hesitate to give us a call. We're here to help support you and to make sure that you're getting what you need from your hearing aids.
